Eugene F. Zelek

Specializing in marketing and trade regulation law, Gene Zelek is a partner in the Chicago law firm of Freeborn & Peters and chairs its Antitrust and Trade Regulation Group. Previously, he practiced marketing law with an international law firm and The Quaker Oats Company, before becoming a marketing manager in Quaker’s Foods Division and returning to the law in 1983.
Gene has written and spoken frequently on various marketing-related legal issues, represents a wide variety of companies and consultants throughout the world and taught an annual 10-week course in the Marketing Department at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management—“The Legal Aspects of Marketing Strategy”—for 11 years. He also teaches in the Kellogg Executive Programs “Pricing Strategies and Tactics” and “Marketing Channel Strategies” and serves as a member of the National Advisory Board of The Pricing Institute, the Professional Pricing Society (PPS), the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA), the Promotion Marketing Association (PMA) and the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP). He co-authored Establishing and Maintaining an Effective Resale Price Policy, Antitrust (Summer 2003), wrote The Legal Framework for Pricing in Nagle and Holden, THE STRATEGY AND TACTICS OF PRICING (3d ed. 2002) and contributed to KELLOGG ON MARKETING (D. Iacobucci ed. 2001).
After receiving an undergraduate degree in journalism with high honors from the University of Illinois, Gene graduated cum laude from the Northwestern University School of Law and with Distinction from the Kellogg School of Management. While at Northwestern, he was an Executive Editor of its law review and a Distinguished Scholar.
Gene has extensive counseling and litigation experience in antitrust, pricing and distribution, as well as strategic alliances, supply relationships, advertising, branding, licensing, new product development and other marketing issues.
